Text Compare: Find Differences Between Two Texts
Free diff checker: compare two texts and highlight every difference by line, word or character. Works with .txt and .docx files and runs 100% in your browser.
Paste or drop text into both boxes. Every line appears here next to its counterpart.
About this tool
Drop two versions of a text into this diff checker and every addition, deletion, and altered line lights up instantly — green for insertions, red for removals, yellow for changed lines with the exact edited words picked out inside them. Every line sits next to its counterpart in a side-by-side table or a unified inline view, with changes picked out by line, word, or character. You can paste text directly, or drag and drop .txt and .docx files into either pane — Word documents are read entirely in your browser. A statistics bar tracks lines added, removed, and changed alongside an overall similarity score, and the finished comparison exports as a full line-by-line report (PDF or standalone HTML), travels as a share link that reopens it exactly, or copies as a plain-text summary. Editors reviewing a revised manuscript, lawyers spotting quiet changes in a returned contract, and developers eyeballing two config files all use it to answer one question: what exactly changed?
How to Compare Two Texts
- 1
Add the original version to the left pane and the revised version to the right — paste directly, click Upload, or drag a .txt or .docx file straight onto either box.
- 2
Pick how finely to highlight — Line, Word, or Character — and a layout, side-by-side or inline. The diff engine aligns the two versions instantly, highlighting insertions in green, removals in red, and changed lines in yellow with the altered words emphasized, while the stats bar reports lines added, removed, changed, and a percentage similarity score.
- 3
Review the numbered lines, then use Share to copy a link that reopens this exact comparison, PDF or HTML to download the full line-by-line report, Summary to copy a plain-text change list, or Swap to reverse the comparison.
Why Compare Text with Wrklyst
- Both Versions Stay Private
- The comparison runs entirely in your browser tab, so unpublished drafts, contract language, and internal documents are never sent to us. Even a share link carries the texts inside the link itself, in the part of the URL browsers never send to a server, so treat the link like the documents.
- Differences in Milliseconds
- Even long documents diff instantly because there's no upload step — the alignment happens the moment both panes have content.
- Straight to Work
- The comparison view is the whole page: no registration screen, no plan picker, no export paywall between you and the answer.
Getting More from Text Comparison
- Compare against the version you last approved, not the version you last saw — silent intermediate edits are what diffs exist to catch.
- When reviewing a contract redline, read every highlighted deletion twice; removals are easier to miss than additions.
- Comparing Word documents? Drop the .docx files straight onto the panes instead of copy-pasting — extraction is cleaner and happens entirely in your browser.
- Keep dated copies of important documents specifically so you always have a clean baseline to diff against later.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use this to detect plagiarism?
It excels at direct comparison: put a suspected copy next to the original and lifted passages become obvious immediately. What it doesn't do is search the web for matches — you supply both texts. For checking a student paper against a specific source you already have, it's ideal.
Does it compare word-by-word or line-by-line?
Always line by line: every line sits next to its counterpart, so you can read the two versions across. The Line, Word, and Character switch sets how finely changes are picked out inside a changed line. Line marks the whole line, Word (the default) emphasizes the exact words that differ, and Character catches single-letter edits like a transposed digit in a reference number. That precision matters when reviewing legal or technical text where one altered term changes the meaning.
Can I compare Word documents without uploading them anywhere?
Yes — drag a .docx file onto either pane and its text is extracted right in your browser tab; the file never leaves your machine, which matters for contracts and unpublished drafts. Plain .txt, .md, .csv, and similar text files load the same way. Formatting like bold or fonts is set aside so the comparison focuses purely on the words.
Will formatting differences trigger false positives?
Whitespace and line-break differences can register as changes, since the tool compares the literal characters you provide. The Ignore toggles (Spaces, Blank lines, and Case) suppress the most common culprits — leading and trailing whitespace, blank lines, and capitalization — and for anything messier, our Text Formatter can normalize both versions first so the diff shows only genuine edits.
Can I share or download the comparison?
Yes. Share copies a link that reopens the exact comparison, both texts and your settings, for anyone you send it to. The texts travel inside the link, in the fragment browsers never send to a server, so no copy is stored anywhere. PDF and HTML give you the full side-by-side report with every line, not just the changes, color-coded with line numbers. Very long texts make very long links that some chat apps cut off; email or the HTML report work for those.
How is the similarity percentage calculated?
The score compares the two texts word by word and measures how much material they share relative to their combined length — identical texts score 100%, completely unrelated ones approach 0%. It's a fast way to gauge how heavy a revision was before reading a single highlight, and it updates live as either pane changes.
