Line Sorter
About this tool
Feed this tool a list — names, numbers, URLs, SKU codes — and reorder it alphabetically, numerically, in reverse, or shuffled randomly, with duplicate lines stripped on request. Anyone who wrangles lists, from teachers randomizing presentation order to analysts deduplicating exports, gets minutes back every time.
How to Sort and Deduplicate Lines
- 1
Paste your list into the input, one item per line — the format virtually every spreadsheet column, log file, and text export already uses.
- 2
Select an operation: A-to-Z or Z-to-A alphabetical sorting, numerical ordering, random shuffle, or duplicate removal. Combine sorting with deduplication for a clean, ordered result.
- 3
Copy the processed list back out to your spreadsheet, script, or document.
Why Sort Lists with Wrklyst
- Your Data Stays on Your Machine
- Sorting is pure in-browser computation — customer lists and internal identifiers are never transmitted, which matters when the list is an email export.
- Faster than Spreadsheet Gymnastics
- Pasting into a tool beats creating a sheet, selecting a range, and finding the right menu — especially for one-off cleanups.
- Free at Any Volume
- Ten lines or ten thousand, there's no tier that unlocks longer lists and no account standing between you and the sorted output.
List-Wrangling Tips
- Deduplicate before sorting when both are needed — it's easier to spot leftover near-duplicates in an ordered list.
- Numbers stored with units ("5 kg") sort as text; strip the units first for correct numerical order.
- Shuffle twice if the first order looks suspiciously meaningful — coincidence happens.
- For mailing lists, lowercase everything before deduplicating; email addresses are case-insensitive in practice.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between alphabetical and numerical sorting?
Alphabetical sorting compares character by character, which puts 10 before 2 because "1" precedes "2". Numerical sorting parses each line as a number first, producing 2, 10, 100 in the order humans expect. If your list is quantities, prices, or IDs, choose numerical.
How does duplicate removal decide two lines match?
Lines must be exactly identical to be collapsed — same characters, same case. "Apple" and "apple" survive as two entries. When you need case-insensitive deduplication, lowercase everything first with our Text Formatter, then remove duplicates here for a strict single-copy list.
When would I use the random shuffle?
Any time order implies unfairness: picking presentation sequence for students, assigning review order for applications, rotating a task roster, or drawing a raffle. A shuffle from a list you can see beats mentally "randomizing", which humans are notoriously bad at doing without bias.
Can it handle a list exported from Excel or Google Sheets?
Yes — copy a column and paste it straight in; each cell arrives as its own line. After sorting or deduplicating, pasting back into the sheet restores one item per row. It's often quicker than the spreadsheet's own remove-duplicates dialog for a single column.
