About this tool
This calculator converts a CGPA on a 10-point scale into a percentage, or a percentage back into CGPA, using the formula your board or university actually publishes. There is no single national conversion in India: CBSE multiplies by 9.5, VTU subtracts 0.75 before multiplying by 10, and many universities simply multiply by 10. Pick the formula, type your CGPA, and the result updates as you type, with the formula it used shown underneath so you can quote it on a form. It is plain arithmetic in your browser, and nothing you enter is sent anywhere.
How to Convert CGPA to Percentage
- 1
Choose the direction: CGPA to percentage when a form asks for marks, or percentage to CGPA when a portal wants a grade point and you only have marks.
- 2
Pick the formula your institution uses. CBSE (× 9.5) covers CBSE's grade-based results and the colleges that adopted the same factor, VTU uses (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, and the 10-point option multiplies by 10, which several universities specify.
- 3
Enter your CGPA (0 to 10) or percentage (0 to 100). The answer appears instantly to two decimal places, with the formula that produced it.

Why Use This CGPA Calculator
- Names the Formula It Used
- A converted percentage only counts if it matches your institution's method. The result always shows which formula produced it, so you can cite it, or switch formulas and see how far the answer moves.
- Works Both Ways
- Convert CGPA to percentage for job and admission forms, or a percentage to CGPA for portals that ask for grade points. Each direction is the exact inverse of the same formula, so a round trip lands where it started.
- Nothing to Install, Nothing Sent
- The conversion is a few lines of arithmetic running on your phone or laptop. There is no sign-up, and the numbers you type never leave your device.
When Do You Need to Convert CGPA to Percentage?
- Job Applications and Placements
- Recruitment portals and campus placement forms often ask for a percentage and set a cut-off, such as 60% throughout. A CGPA has to be converted before you can tell whether you clear it.
- Admissions to Higher Studies
- Postgraduate and diploma application forms in India frequently ask for aggregate marks. Foreign universities and credential evaluators usually work from your official transcript instead, so a calculated figure is for your own reference there.
- Government Exams and Scholarships
- Eligibility for competitive exams, fellowships and scholarships is commonly stated as a minimum percentage, and the application asks you to enter yours.
- Comparing Results Across Boards
- When one student has a CBSE CGPA and another has state-board marks, converting with the published formula puts both on the same scale.
CGPA to Percentage Formulas Compared
One CGPA of 8.5, four answers. The right one is whichever your institution publishes.
| Method | Verdict | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| CBSE: CGPA × 9.5 | 8.5 → 80.75% | CBSE's conversion for its grade-based results, also adopted by many colleges. The 9.5 comes from CBSE's average marks in the top grade band, so a perfect 10 converts to 95%, not 100%. |
| VTU: (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 | 8.5 → 77.5% | Visvesvaraya Technological University's formula. The offset puts every result 7.5 points below a straight × 10, so do not mix it up with the 10-point method on a VTU application. |
| 10-point: CGPA × 10 | 8.5 → 85% | The simplest conversion, used where a university states it. It gives the highest figure of the three, which is exactly why you should not use it unless your institution does. |
| Band-based formulas and tables | Depends on the band | Some universities apply a different formula to each CGPA range, or publish a lookup table. No single multiplier reproduces those; quote the table from your marksheet or examination regulations. |
Before You Put the Number on a Form
- Write down the formula with the result; many applications ask how the percentage was derived.
- Use one conversion for every semester on an application, even if another formula gives a better number.
- Round only at the end, to however many decimals the form asks for.
- If your university issues an official percentage-equivalence certificate, quote that rather than a calculated figure.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert CGPA to percentage?
Multiply by the factor your board or university publishes. For CBSE, percentage = CGPA × 9.5, so a CGPA of 8.5 is 80.75%. For VTU, percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, so 8.5 becomes 77.5%. Where a university converts on a straight 10-point scale, 8.5 is 85%. The same CGPA gives three different percentages, which is why the formula matters more than the calculator.
Why does CBSE multiply CGPA by 9.5?
CBSE set the factor from past results. It averaged the marks of students in the top grade band (91–100) over several years, and that average came to about 95, so a grade point of 10 maps to roughly 95%. The result is an indicative percentage for CBSE's grade-based marksheets, not your exact marks.
How do I convert percentage to CGPA?
Run the formula backwards. Under the CBSE method, CGPA = percentage ÷ 9.5, so 76% is a CGPA of 8.0. Under VTU's, CGPA = percentage ÷ 10 + 0.75, so 76% is 8.35. Switch the calculator to Percentage to CGPA and it applies the inverse of whichever formula is selected.
Is SGPA converted to percentage the same way?
Usually, yes. SGPA is your grade point average for one semester and CGPA is the credit-weighted average across every semester so far, but both sit on the same 10-point scale and universities apply the same conversion to either. Enter an SGPA where the calculator asks for CGPA. If your marksheet states a separate rule for semester grades, that rule wins.
Which formula should I use for my university?
The one printed on your grade card or in your university's examination regulations, since each institution sets its own. If the marksheet is silent, look for a CGPA conversion circular on the university website. Some universities use a formula that changes from one CGPA band to the next, or a lookup table, which no single multiplier can reproduce; quote their table instead.
What is 7.5 CGPA in percentage?
It depends on the formula. Under CBSE's, 7.5 × 9.5 = 71.25%. Under VTU's, (7.5 − 0.75) × 10 = 67.5%. On a straight 10-point scale it is 75%. The table above lists every half point from 5 to 10 under all three.
How is CGPA calculated?
Each course's grade is turned into grade points on a 10-point scale, multiplied by the course's credits, and the products are added up and divided by the total credits. SGPA does this for one semester; CGPA does it across every semester so far. That is why a high-credit course moves your CGPA more than a low-credit one, and why the average of your SGPAs is only equal to your CGPA when every semester carried the same credits.
Does CBSE still give results in CGPA?
Recent CBSE board marksheets report marks rather than a CGPA, so the 9.5 conversion mainly matters for older certificates issued under CBSE's grading system, and for colleges that adopted the same factor for their own grades.
