What Is Lorem Ipsum, and Why Do Designers Use It?

Lorem Ipsum is placeholder text used in design and publishing to fill a layout with realistic-looking paragraphs before real content exists — it's scrambled, altered Latin that reads like language but isn't meant to be understood, which is precisely the point: it lets you judge a layout's typography and spacing without a reader's eye getting pulled into actually reading the words.

Where does Lorem Ipsum actually come from?

It's derived from a genuine passage of Latin text — Cicero's "De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum," written around 45 BC — that's been scrambled, abbreviated, and had words altered over centuries of use in printing. It's been a standard in the printing and typesetting industry since at least the 1500s, long before desktop publishing existed, which is why it persists as the default filler text across design tools today rather than something more modern taking its place.

Why not just use real sentences as placeholder text?

This is the actual reason Lorem Ipsum exists and persists: real, readable text distracts you. If a mockup says "Click here to get started," a client or reviewer reads the words and reacts to the message, not the layout, font size, or spacing you're actually trying to evaluate. Lorem Ipsum's nonsense nature keeps attention on the visual design — line length, letter spacing, how paragraphs break — rather than the content itself.

When should you actually use Lorem Ipsum?

  • Early wireframes and mockups, before real copy is written.
  • Testing typography choices — font, size, line height — where you need enough text to see how it behaves across multiple lines and paragraphs.
  • Template and theme previews, where you're showing structure and style, not specific content.
  • Print layout testing, checking how text flows around images or across columns.

When should you avoid it?

  • Client presentations of near-final work. Placeholder text in something meant to look finished reads as unfinished or careless.
  • Anything going to user testing. Real users react to real content; nonsense text produces meaningless feedback about how people will actually respond to your copy.
  • Final layouts close to launch, where actual copy length affects spacing decisions that placeholder text of a different length won't catch.

How much Lorem Ipsum should you generate?

Use caseSuggested amount
Testing a headline1 short phrase
Body paragraph preview3–5 sentences
Full page mockupMultiple paragraphs, matching expected content length

Generating text close to the actual expected length of your real content matters — filling a card meant for a two-sentence bio with five paragraphs of Lorem Ipsum will make a layout look broken once real, shorter content replaces it.

Are there alternatives to Lorem Ipsum?

Yes — some designers use "greeking" (blurred or simplified text blocks instead of real words), or topic-specific filler generators (tech jargon, corporate buzzwords) that are still nonsensical but thematically closer to the final content. These serve the same purpose; Lorem Ipsum just remains the most universally recognized default, which has its own advantage — reviewers instantly recognize it as placeholder text and won't mistake it for a content decision.

The takeaway

Lorem Ipsum exists to solve a specific problem: keeping a reviewer's attention on layout and typography instead of message content, during the phase of design where content isn't finalized yet. Generate roughly the length you expect the real content to be, use it freely in early mockups, and swap it out well before anything reaches a client or real user — nonsense text in a "finished" deliverable undermines confidence in the whole piece.
